Built With Care for the Way You Work

Office furniture needs to do more than look attractive. A desk should provide enough room for daily responsibilities, storage should keep important materials accessible, and a chair should support the way the space is used. Customer reviews can offer valuable insight into both the finished furniture and the guidance provided throughout the selection process.

At Amish Country Heirlooms, the design team takes time to understand each customer’s workspace, preferred style, storage needs, and available room. From comparing desk configurations to choosing finishes and coordinating pieces, the goal is to make creating a productive office feel comfortable and straightforward.

I bought the most beautiful office furniture from Karen at this location, and I am blown away about how great it is! Four items that are extremely well made, solid birch wood, beautifully finished, and basically indestructible! I’ve never had anything made so well and beautifully. Absolutely love it… Highly recommend this location and talk to Karen!

We enjoy working with Karen Gingerich at Amish Country Heirlooms in Arthur, Illinois. We’ve purchased a cherry coffee table, cherry dining room set and recently, a hickory kitchen table and chairs. All the pieces are very high quality and will last for generations. We highly recommend the furniture and store!

Love my custom made microwave cart I just picked up last week. I was able to pick out the type of wood I wanted, color of stain, and hardware. I actually will be using it as a printer stand for my new office. It has extra storage that will come on handy.

I have been doing business with Karen, Steve and Loraine at Amish Country Heirlooms for about 20 years and during that time I have found the furniture I have purchased to be of the highest quality. They are a great group to work with and have always been very caring; making sure you receive what you need and always going the extra mile. Last spring we were there to pick up some merchandise and after loading, our truck would not start. Karen was kind enough to help us out, even to the point of walking home to get her car charger. Not many people would go to that extent to help their customers. Wonderful people to deal with, and a store worth trusting to deliver everything promised and more.Don &Tracy Dorrough

Great store with a wide selection of first quality furniture to choose from. Great staff that is willing to work with you to get you what you need. If they don't have in the showroom they will custom order for you in your color and design. Purchased couches and bedroom suite and absolutely love them.

Which Office Desk Fits the Way You Work?

Find the Right Desk for Your Workday

The desk establishes how an office functions and how efficiently work materials can be organized. A desk with a hutch adds vertical storage, an executive desk provides a substantial central workstation, an L desk creates separate work zones, and a lift desk allows the working height to be adjusted. The right choice depends on your room dimensions, equipment, storage needs, and the amount of time you expect to spend at the desk.

A desk with a hutch combines a primary work surface with shelving, cabinets, drawers, or cubbies positioned above it. This vertical configuration helps keep books, documents, office supplies, and decorative pieces within reach without requiring a separate bookcase.

This style works well when wall space is available but floor space is limited. Before selecting one, measure the complete height and width of the unit, including nearby windows, outlets, light switches, trim, and ceiling features.

An executive desk provides a generous work surface and often includes substantial drawer or cabinet storage. Its broad scale makes it suitable for private offices, larger home workspaces, and rooms where the desk is intended to serve as a central focal point.

Consider how the desk will be positioned and whether the front, back, or both sides will remain visible. Allow enough room for the office chair, guest seating, opened drawers, and comfortable movement around the workstation.

An L desk provides two connected work surfaces arranged at a right angle. It can create separate areas for a computer, paperwork, meetings, creative projects, or other daily responsibilities.

This configuration works well in a corner or as a freestanding workstation within a larger room. Confirm which side of the desk should extend into the room and account for nearby doors, windows, outlets, and walking paths before choosing the orientation.

A lift desk allows the work surface to move between seated and standing heights. Depending on the model, adjustment may be powered or manually operated, giving users greater flexibility during longer work periods.

Consider the equipment that will sit on the desk and how cords will move as the surface changes height. The available adjustment range should also accommodate the primary user’s comfortable seated and standing positions.

Create a Workspace Without Overfilling the Room

Practical Desks for Smaller and Shared Spaces

Not every workspace requires a large desk or an entire dedicated room. Secretary desks offer concealed storage within a compact cabinet, standard desks provide a versatile work surface, and youth desks create a more appropriately scaled place for homework and creative activities. These options work especially well in bedrooms, living areas, smaller home offices, and multipurpose rooms.

Secretary Desks

Secretary desks combine a compact writing surface with built-in drawers, shelves, or cabinet storage. Many designs feature a work surface that can be closed when it is not in use, helping the room maintain a more orderly appearance.

Standard Desks

Standard desks provide a straightforward work surface for computers, paperwork, writing, studying, and everyday household tasks. Designs may range from simple open-leg desks to models with drawers, kneehole storage, or modesty panels.

Youth Desks

Youth desks provide a dedicated place for homework, reading, drawing, and computer use at a scale intended for younger users. Drawers or shelves can help organize school supplies, books, devices, and creative materials.

Choose Storage That Supports Your Workflow

Keep Your Office Organized From Floor to Ceiling

An effective office needs designated storage for different kinds of materials. File cabinets protect and organize documents, bookcases keep reference materials visible, credenzas provide concealed storage and a secondary work surface, and file cabinets with bookcases combine multiple functions vertically. The best arrangement depends on what you use most frequently and how much open wall and floor space is available.

File cabinets provide dedicated drawers for organizing documents, records, household paperwork, and business files. Available configurations may include two-, three-, or four-drawer cabinets, allowing you to choose a height and capacity suited to your needs.

Place frequently used files near the primary desk and allow enough clearance for drawers to extend fully. A lower cabinet may also provide an additional surface for a printer, scanner, lamp, or office supplies.

Bookcases keep books, binders, reference materials, photographs, and decorative pieces visible and easy to access. They are available in a range of heights and widths, making them useful for both small workspaces and full office walls.

Consider the height of the items you plan to store and whether adjustable shelves would be beneficial. Taller bookcases make efficient use of vertical space, while lower designs can help a compact room feel more open.

Credenzas are typically lower and wider than bookcases or vertical file cabinets. They can provide drawers, doors, shelving, file storage, and a broad top surface for equipment or additional workspace.

A credenza works especially well behind or beside an executive desk. It can hold printers, office supplies, reference materials, or presentation equipment while keeping the primary desktop less cluttered.

File cabinets with bookcases combine document storage below with open shelving or cabinets above. This vertical design can organize several types of office materials while occupying less floor space than separate storage pieces.

These units work well beside a desk or along a smaller office wall. Measure the complete height carefully and consider how easily the upper shelves can be reached from the intended location.

Complete the Office With Purpose-Built Furniture

Once the desk and primary storage have been selected, supporting furniture helps the office function more effectively. Gun cabinets provide a designated furniture piece for lawful and responsible storage, conference room chairs accommodate guests and meetings, and desk chairs support the person working at the primary workstation

Gun Cabinets

Gun cabinets provide dedicated storage for firearms, related equipment, or collections within a substantial furniture-style cabinet. Designs may include glass or solid doors, interior racks, drawers, shelving, and available locking features.

Conference Room Chairs

Conference room chairs provide seating for clients, coworkers, family members, or guests during meetings and conversations. They are commonly placed around a conference table or positioned across from an executive desk.

Desk Chairs

Desk chairs are designed for use at the primary workstation and may offer swiveling, rolling, height-adjustment, or upholstered features. The appropriate chair should allow the user to sit comfortably while reaching the work surface and equipment

Personalize Your Home Office

Customize Office Furniture Around the Way You Work

Every office supports a different routine. One person may need an expansive desktop and extensive file storage, while another may need a compact writing desk that fits into a bedroom or shared living area. Customization helps ensure that the furniture supports both the room and the work taking place within it.

Begin with a desk, bookcase, cabinet, or office collection you like, then explore the available choices. Depending on the furniture and builder, options may include wood species, finish colors, dimensions, desk orientation, drawer arrangements, hardware, shelving, filing systems, and coordinating pieces.

  • Choose your desk configuration to support computer work, paperwork, meetings, or multiple daily responsibilities.
  • Coordinate your storage pieces around files, books, equipment, supplies, and frequently used materials.
  • Adjust available drawer layouts to keep paperwork and office essentials organized near the workstation.
  • Personalize wood and finish to complement flooring, trim, existing furniture, and nearby rooms.
  • Plan equipment and cable space around computers, monitors, printers, chargers, and other office technology.
  • Match seating to use by considering desk height, meeting needs, movement, and daily comfort.

Office Furniture FAQ’s

Office Furniture Questions, Answered

Helpful guidance for choosing desks, storage, chairs, and custom office furniture.

Measure the room’s length, width, and ceiling height, along with the usable wall space between doors, windows, vents, and closets. Record doorway, hallway, and stairway dimensions to confirm that larger desks and cabinets can be delivered. Account for office-chair movement, fully opened drawers, cabinet doors, and comfortable walking space.

An executive desk provides one broad central work surface and often includes substantial built-in storage. An L desk creates two connected work areas, which can be useful for separating computer work, paperwork, and meetings. The best choice depends on your room layout and whether you prefer one expansive surface or several distinct work zones.

Standard, secretary, and youth desks generally require less room than executive or L-shaped designs. A secretary desk can be especially helpful in a multipurpose space because the work surface may be closed when it is not needed. A desk with a hutch can also add storage vertically rather than using more floor space.

The right capacity depends on the amount of paperwork you currently keep and how much you expect to add. A two-drawer cabinet may be sufficient for household records or a light home office, while three- and four-drawer models provide more room for business documents and long-term filing. Leave some unused capacity so the drawers do not become overcrowded.

Available customization may include hardwood species, finish color, dimensions, desk orientation, hardware, drawer arrangements, filing systems, shelving, and coordinating storage pieces. Exact choices depend on the furniture design and builder. The Amish Country Heirlooms team can help you review the options available for the pieces you prefer.

The furniture does not need to be identical, but repeating a few details can help the room feel connected. Coordinate elements such as wood tone, finish color, hardware, leg shape, or overall style. You can also combine a collection desk with complementary storage pieces when a perfectly matched set does not suit your room.
